UI/UX Designer - Rugela

Three Tablets is looking for a mid- or senior-level UI/UX Designer to help shape the visual and interaction language of a Jewish community discussion-oriented platform.

This is an ongoing contractor role for someone who can work through product questions thoughtfully, design clear and calm user experiences, and collaborate well with a small, async-first team. There may be additional hours available if you also do frontend implementation work.

You’ll collaborate directly with the founder/architect and engineering team.

Role overview

  • Hours: Approximately 8 hours/week for design work
  • Additional hours: Available if you also take on frontend development work
  • Location: Fully remote
  • Work style: Async-first, flexible schedule
  • Engagement type: Ongoing independent contractor role
  • Compensation:
    • Mid-career, roughly 4–7 years: about $75–100/hr
    • Senior, roughly 7+ years: about $100–150/hr
    • Frontend development work is compensated at the same band
  • Time zone fit: North America or Europe preferred, or strong comfort communicating across those time zones

We are flexible about when you work. There is one recurring meeting we would prefer you attend, and we generally value people spreading their work across the week rather than compressing everything into a single block.

About Rugela

Rugela is a Jewish community discussion-oriented platform. The goal is simple: to create a place for Jews to be themselves online.

The product is built around connection, safety, thoughtful engagement, and collective growth. The platform emphasizes warmth, calm, delight, and community-oriented design, with interactions that guide users toward thoughtful and positive experiences.

Rugela is a small, founder-led team. This is a good fit for someone who likes meaningful product work. Rugela is not just a profit-optimization project; we are building something intended to support real community, safety, and thoughtful online conversation.

What you’ll do

You’ll help own Rugela’s visual and interaction language, working on product flows, interface design, and user experience details across the platform.

Near-term work includes:

  • Designing community UX, including a staged rollout
  • Improving onboarding sequencing
  • Designing reporting and moderation workflows
  • Refining interaction patterns that support thoughtful engagement and user safety
  • Helping make the product feel warm, calm, clear, and trustworthy

Depending on your skills and interests, you may also help implement frontend work directly.

Design and product focus

This role is a good fit for someone who enjoys designing for nuanced product problems, not just producing polished screens.

The work involves questions like:

  • How should a community platform encourage thoughtful participation?
  • How can reporting and moderation flows feel clear, safe, and respectful?
  • How should onboarding help people understand the culture of the space?
  • How can the interface feel warm and calm without becoming cluttered or precious?

Tech context

Rugela is built with:

  • Django
  • HTMX
  • Native CSS

You do not need prior Django or HTMX experience for the design role. Comfort working close to HTML/CSS is important, and the ability to apply design thinking directly in frontend code is a strong plus.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Mid- or senior-level UI/UX design experience
  • Experience working through multiple product or feature cycles
  • Strong visual and interaction design judgment
  • Comfort designing for web applications and product workflows
  • Comfort working close to HTML and CSS
  • Clear written and spoken English for async collaboration
  • Good judgment about scope, tradeoffs, usability, accessibility, and user impact
  • Comfort collaborating through issues, pull requests, chat, and occasional videoconferences

For senior candidates, we generally expect 7+ years of relevant professional experience. For mid-career candidates, we generally expect 4–7 years.

Nice to have

These are helpful, but not required:

  • Ability to do frontend implementation work
  • Experience with Django, HTMX, or server-rendered web applications
  • Experience shipping community platforms, forums, or non-feed social products
  • Experience running accessibility audits or shipping WCAG-conscious work
  • Experience designing moderation, reporting, onboarding, or trust-and-safety flows
  • Interest in or experience with Jewish content, communities, or topics

Working environment

Rugela is a small, founder-led team. We work async by default and value consistency, thoughtful communication, and deliberate pace over sprints, crunches, or urgency theater.

You should be comfortable working independently, communicating clearly, and helping move product work forward without needing a lot of ceremony.

Helpful application materials

Please send your resume or CV. You are also welcome to include any materials that help us understand how you work, such as:

  • Portfolio
  • Case studies
  • Examples of shipped product design work
  • Screens or prototypes
  • Accessibility work
  • Frontend code samples, if relevant
  • A short note about relevant community-platform, moderation, onboarding, accessibility, or product design experience

Hiring process

Our hiring process may include:

  • Application review
  • Intro conversation
  • Design/product conversation
  • Portfolio or work review
  • Final conversation
